One of the powerful cyclone ever in last 14 years in India – Phailin. Hits at Gopalpur, Odisha. Reporeted wind speed of Phailin at the time of hitting at Gopalpur is 200 Kmph. Cyclone creates severe landfall and it will damages roads. Heavy to very heavy falls at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (≥ 25cm) would occur in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
Already Heavy Rains started in Coastal areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Power supply has beed cut in coastal distrcts in Odisha and in Andhra Pradesh power cut is from Ichhapuram to Palasa. Indian Meteorological Department warned strong winds uprooting trees, National Nighways and Electricity Poles damage will occurs in A.P & Odisha.
It is raining already in coastal areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh and power supply has been cut from Ichchapuram to Palasa in Andhra Pradesh and in seven coastal districts in Odisha. Power supply has been hit in capital Bhubaneswar too. There are reports of strong winds uprooting trees and electricity poles in Santhabomalli in Srikakulam district.
“Phailin may have ‘weakened’ prior to landfall, however its storm surge was already generated when it was a Category 5 equivalent tropical cyclone,” said Jonathon Erdman, senior meteorologist at weather.com. “Remember, Hurricane Katrina also weakened from a Category 5 to a Category 3 hurricane prior to hitting the northern Gulf Coast, but still managed to generate a record U.S. storm surge height in Mississippi, not to mention overwhelming New Orleans.”
Around 157 Trains has cancelled by Indian Railways at Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Around 4.2 lakhs people had been moved to higher ground or shelters in Orissa, and 100,000 more in neighboring Andhra Pradesh
